Government as a Buyer, Government as a User

I was keen to moderate this panel as many of my technology clients struggle with the Government procurement process, often making it extremely resourcing draining, especially for those in the SMB tech sector, who may not have the resources to stick with it, unlike the big tech players in the market.

I experienced much needed optimism at the launch of The Innovation Papers in Canberra, they are full of policy ideas and inspiration for Australian industry policy.  I was delighted to be one of the contributors with a focus on embracing workplace diversity to build a strong economy,  you can pick up a copy here.

Throughout the event I observed an organic and unofficial theme of collaboration, which aligns with what I’ve always thought, multi-disciplinary collaboration is what is needed on a state and local level with many stakeholders to improve collaboration between the industry and Government.

The Innovation Papers does exactly that, it brings people from all corners of the industry with diverse backgrounds to share insights and ideas to ignite real action.

I moderated a panel with three contributors of The Innovation Papers;

  • Dr Lesley Seebeck, ANU, Moving beyond (just) delivery
  • Catherine Thompson, Hypereal, The digital marketplace and procurement reform
  • Marina Yastreboff, Australian Society for Computers and the Law, Rules as Code – Challenges and opportunities for lawmakers

I recommend you listen to the full 13 minute discussion, below I summarise some key points that stood out for me.

What is the one thing we can do to campaign for that impact and change that we need?

  • Catherine Thompson choose public accountability,  essential to have dialogue and understand why decisions are taking place.
  • Dr Lesley Seebeck urges Government to publish every bit of data and track it. She mentioned she was aware of community groups effectively doing this right now.
  • Marina Yastreboff recommends to make our laws and rules understandable and interrogate and promote a participatory democracy.

Having conversations such as these especially in Canberra will bring these issues to the fore and I’m very happy to support this, other points I picked up during the discussion include.

  • Make Government data transparent and make it accurate to enable more informed debates.
  • The mindset needs to shift from bureaucracy. We must deliver economic and social outcomes that lead to better a government and better wellbeing for people in communities.
  • Rules as code, the concept of writing digital government rules, legislation, regulation, standards, and policy is an opportunity to build better ways to consult the public and explain how the rules will work.
  • We need Government to lead and modernise its IT effort so it supports democracy, it’s a marathon and not sprint and should not fit in with election cycles.  Dr Lesley Seebeck did a tremendous job outlining four key areas of change, to learn more about them, please watch the recording.

The Innovation Papers: Part 6 – Panel. Dr Lesley Seebeck, Cath Thompson, Marina Yastreboff and Luli Adeyemo

Embrace workplace diversity to build a stronger economy

With the latest Census data showing Australia to be more culturally diverse than ever, leaders in the public and private sectors now face one of the nation’s most significant and pressing challenges – achieving workplace diversity...

‘In Conversation with Change Makers’ Episode #4

Industry thought leader and Best Case Scenario Founder & Director Luli Adeyemo returns with the fourth episode of the ‘In Conversation with Change Makers’ video and podcast series, to discuss ‘Ethical & Effective AI in Healthcare’ with RMIT University’s Executive Dean, School of Computing Technologies and Telstra Health’s ‘2021 Brilliant Women in Digital Health’ award recipient, Professor Karin Verspoor.

"We can’t bring together large data sets unless we have the mechanisms to do so.”

Episode #4

Ethical & Effective AI in Healthcare

Pictured: Professor Karin Verspoor FAIDH - Executive Dean, School of Computing Technologies, RMIT University

Some of the biggest concerns surrounding the use of AI when conducting healthcare studies are focussed around representation, data privacy concerns, and how the digitisation of treatment benefits both healthcare practitioners and patients.

“Ensuring we respect the privacy of the data as AI algorithms are hungry for data, we can’t bring together large data sets unless we have the mechanisms to do so” says Karin, adding “there are efforts to bring data across multiple sources but we’re not quite there yet.”

Professor Karin Verspoor has been applying AI skills in the biomedical domain since 2003, addressing problems ranging from information extraction of biological concepts and events to the use of text mining to support interpretation of biological data, to detection and prediction of disease from clinical data.

Joining RMIT University in February, Professor Verspoor is responsible for providing academic leadership for all aspects of computer science research and education. As a computer scientist by training with an emphasis on artificial intelligence and cognitive science, as well as language representation and processing in the biomedical domain, she investigates some of the challenges of AI in healthcare including the lack of diversity and inclusion.

The fourth episode of the ‘In Conversation with Change Makers’ uncovers the biggest challenges facing healthcare post-Pandemic and AI-enabled services.

‘In Conversation with Change Makers’ Episode #3

Speaking directly with influential change makers within Healthcare, Government, and Technology, Best Case Scenario Founder & Director Luli Adeyemo is creating dialogue to uncover disruptive innovations, developing trends, and ethical responsibilities from those at the forefront of making change.

Passion for inclusivity in business comes from real life experiences.

The highly anticipated third instalment of In Conversation with Change Makers features Laura Simmons, CEO and Founder of Theratrak, discussing inclusivity within the technology landscape for families and children with disabilities, and the benefits of digitising treatment offers both therapists and participants.

Episode #3

Using Technology to Deliver Accessible & Inclusive Healthcare

Laura Simmons, Theratrak

Pictured: Laura Simmons - CEO and Founder, Theratrak

Theratrak is the centralised hub for therapists to securely manage and connect to a clinical team. Within it, professional developers and support therapists create activities specific to one’s treatment style and needs, while allowing one to take expertise home with the use of their app to get the most out of every session, stay on track, and reach certain goals.

Theratrak aims to empower clinicians with the right digital tools to provide the best possible early intervention to children living with disabilities. Founded in 2018, this platform is meant to prescribe home programs for children and families including custom content and notifications. “The minute someone leaves a medical practitioner, they forget up to 80% of the information they’re told. Okay so that’s a medical practitioner. What about a mum who’s got a little boy with autism?” Laura explains. Theratrak captures visual information and therapist’s notes then sends this directly to the participant app so the program can easily be completed by the participant at home.

Laura Simmons has worked across Sydney as a paediatric occupational therapist in the private health sector for almost 10 years. While working with children living with a variety of disabilities and learning difficulties, her aim is to assist them and their families in everyday life to help them to fully participate and have the best quality of life possible.

In the third edition of the ‘In Conversation with Change Makers’ series, Laura uncovers some of the biggest challenges facing healthcare during the pandemic, and how her digital platform allows multi-disciplinary teams to bridge the gap between therapy sessions to create a more inclusive model of healthcare.

Facilitating the rise of AI in Australia

Reading recent headlines in the media you could be mistaken in thinking that AI is still in the innovation stage of the product adoption curve, headlines such as ‘Can AI help where humans cannot?’ and my favourite ‘Sorry Professor, AI did my homework’.

There is no doubt that technology leaders need to maximise AI value, and it is encouraging to see that a critical technology such as AI now gains momentum in the mainstream.  A study from Deloitte supports this with 66% of organisations in their study, consider AI to be critical to their success.

Since we announced our partnership with Queensland AI Hub (a Queensland Government Initiative) in March last year, we have had the pleasure of being part their community and witness the growth, advocacy and promotion of the business capabilities of Australia’s AI industry.

It’s exciting to be part of something that is building Australia’s AI industry into an innovative, sustainable, and globally competitive place.

Australia – The Innovation Nation

I recently read that If digital goods and services were a sector, it would be the 4th largest export sector for Australia. Isn’t this an amazing statistic?

Also, the department of foreign affairs also published that by 2030, digital trade will enable an estimated A$192 billion of economic value in Australia’s domestic economy.

So, there is no doubt that Australia’s innovation savviness is one of its greatest exports. I moderated a panel at the Australian Grand Prix Corporation breakfast in Melbourne last month, the goal was to inform and excite attendees about current opportunities in the innovation space, with a view to furthering trade and innovation into the future between the UK and Australia was truly met.  All positive indicators that Australia is ‘the innovation nation’.

Export Market Development Program

Queensland AI Hub has just launched the Export Market Development Program (EMDP) and have selected our team to provide strategic marketing and engagement support.

We will support the recruitment of a cohort of 25 AI businesses and start-ups.  The grant will equip them with the right tools, skills and insights to prepare and successfully launch their products/services to international markets.

Our experience in this area includes successfully helping scaleups who are in the phase of evaluating their readiness to expand internationally,  contributing to the program’s success.

An awareness campaign of the EMDP has just been launched to ignite engagement. Our tasks include:

  • Develop a Marketing campaign project plan – includes the identification of key channels to reach AI businesses who are ready to expand.  Our team  will leverage our deep relationships with key technology associations who represent tech innovators across many sectors.
  • Craft assets to ease user experience and clearly guide applications from awareness through to action.  The focus is on clearly highlighting the benefits of the program and create social media assets with a strong call to action.
  • Create an engaging theme and a selection of educational marketing assets such as a landing page with payment gateway.
  • Support the application process, to ensure a smooth and pleasing experience.   Tap into our industry expertise and knowledge to vet each application through an interview process to create a short list of the best-fit applicants.

Applications are now open to apply for the grant, just visit the link. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, 25 May 2022.  Please share!

Other great initiatives Queensland AI Hub are supporting
  • Supporting researchers at The University of Queensland where they are using AI – embodied in robotics and virtual reality (VR) – to better understand and accelerate neurological recovery after stroke.
  • And Rockhampton Regional Council‘s Advance Rockhampton team to help facilitate industry engagement and enhance AI capability development in the region – helping to improve industry productivity, generate jobs and increase market access for regional businesses through the adoption of AI.
